There are two mainstream standards for fire resistance testing of rail transit materials, specifically the European Union standard EN 45545 and the American standard NFPA 130. Among them, EN 45545, the European Union Fire Protection Standard for Rail Transit, was officially released in 2013 and revised in 2015. It has officially replaced the German standard DIN 5510-2, British standard BS 6853, French standard NF F16-101, and has become a mandatory new standard for rail transit fire protection in European countries. EN 45545 has also been widely used in China and Southeast Asia.

Part 2 of N 45545, also known as EN 45545-2, is the most commonly used core fire protection standard in the EN45545 series of standards, which tests for a single material.
According to the end use of the material, EN45545-2 standard divides R1-R26 into a total of 26 different categories. According to the risk level of vehicle operation, the EN45545-2 standard divides three fire risk levels into HL1, HL2, and HL3.
The main purpose of the new standard EN45545-2 is to develop rules related to material selection based on material combustion performance, heat release, smoke density, and smoke toxicity.
